Saab 9-3 1998-2002 "OG" Ultimate Virtual Tour and Buyers Quick Guide
Here is a brief demonstration of the "old generation" or OG Saab 9-3, which ran model years 1998-2002 (chassis code YS3D). The OG Saab 9-3 came in 5 door hatchback, 3 door "coupe" and convertible guise. Petrol engines were either 2.0 or 2.3 inline-4, DOCH 16 valve Saab H-engine with or without turbochargers. A 2.2 turbodiesel inline-4 was also introduced to the Saab lineup in 1998.
Trim levels ranged from base to S to SE. Aero was a premium trim with many optional extras. Performance-orientated drivers could opt for the 2.3 high output "HOT" turbo Viggen with mechanical performance upgrades and a body kit. Very few Viggens were made though (just 4,600 units).
All OG 9-3s are old now, but we...

    Good video but it misses one important tip for the re-assembly: put the bulb in same way old one was (with two pins in the sides and one on top) and then put the rubber gasket on by itself, it will be super easy to press the white connector back into position. i tried to seat the connector in the rubber first and then push both back in, it was very hard and didnt work, then i put the rubber on first and it was perfect position to reattach the wires. also these are almost 20 years old now, be very careful with the wires, they break off easily and then you're screwed, gotta re-attach them

      Assuming you mean the handbrake holds the car, but the warning light doesn’t work regardless.. The light is activated by a plunger the lever rests on, so I would suspect that plunger switch has become faulty or out of adjustment.

    • @Biggles
      @Biggles Месяц назад

      @@tainchains It’s not quite so straightforward on an AJV8 since the engine isn’t timed to TDC. There are flats on the ends of the camshafts to which you can attached a locking tool and then you could lock the crank with a bolt through the bell housing inspection port. Remember though this is a redneck repair so I’m not following the correct procedure at all. You can’t lock the cams doing the job this way because you are lifting the cams up, hence the cable ties. There will always be some load on the valves doing the job my way, which is a risk. If you want to time up the engine perfect and be cautions you should be doing the whole job by the workshop manual which involves replacing all the chains, tensioners and guides from the front with the timing cover off and the cam sprockets removed. This video is not for you if you think you can lift the cams up without taking a risk..

    • @tainchains

    • @Biggles

    No true SAAB's after GM Takeover just just rebodied/badge Cavaliers, poor quality in every respect when compared to Actual SAAB production 900's !

    • @Biggles
      @Biggles Месяц назад

      There is no getting around the GM platform used, and we all prefer the cars from yesteryear. However, I think you are oversimplifying the effort Saab made to take what is a very ordinary corporate vehicle platform and make something out of it. For Saab the alternatives were a takeover by General Motors of bankrupcy. How many parts of the Cavalier would fit on that 9-3? Paritcularly the innovations in engine management systems (T5 and T7) and keeping the H-engine in production were impressive. Passenger safety was also the best in the business. Was it so on the Cavalier? Not the same car really is it? Classic 900s are pretty much too old to daily now, so if you want to keep driving a Saab, you have to make consessions.

    Lovely little Herald. Sounds a healthy car. One point though: I hope you take your foot off the cluth as soon as you get into top gear. Just resting your foot on it can wear the thrust bearing and spin the cluth plate causing it to wear fast.

    • @Biggles
      @Biggles Месяц назад

      Thanks for the nice comment. It was a very healthy drivetrain indeed. Unfortunately, the father and son duo who sold it to me as a project had managed to wipe a cam lobe, wedge a cam follower into the block, and destroy the synchro on second gear. Suffice to say I have more of a sense of mechanical care and do not ride the clutch when driving... or indeed over-rev and engine or chew through synchromesh. I was ready for the engine swap but only discovered the damaged gearbox after patting myself on the back for finding a very good used engine. These are very easy to work on though and a replacement gearbox was soon fitted. This was the first true classic car experience for me as I had never driven anything older than 30 years. I was impressed how well the Herald drives despite this. It felt perfectly solid bumbling around country lanes.

I just replaced the CPS and it almost started a couple times after that but now back to nothing but the engine turning over. Any guess as to what I might have going on or could check? Unfortunately it is impossible for me to give technical advice on that issue. What you have been told is, in my experience, a typical answer from a seller trying to offload a car after discovering the repair would be too expensive. Of course I might be wrong, but at any rate unless you are a DIY enthusiast who can fix cars independently, then you need to find a good Jaguar specialist to diagnose the fault properly and give an estimate for a lasting repair. Anything else is pure guesswork.

    Great work and great to see a car being kept alive. What supercharger specialist did you use and would you say the work was worth it? Thanks.

      @Biggles 4 месяца назад

      The specialist is a private enthusiast with lots of experience rebuilding these superchargers. The work is both necessary and worth it. Owners often neglect servicing superchargers beyond an oil change. In the case of blower on this example, the couple was nearly broken, so it would have needed work soon anyway. Also, the bearings don't last forever, so it was good to get those changed at the same time. The bonus was getting the "inlet" side ported and polished.

    My 2007 Toyota Tacoma has an annoying leak where the timing chain cover meets the head (a mfg sealant failure) the rule of thumb is to watch it and if it gets really bad pull the timing chain cover and reseal. Best to wait until the timing chain needs to be changed ( about 200k mi) do it then. This tutorial, while abbreviated, was really informative and helpful. I'd like to get a'95 XJ 6 one day. Your insights are appreciated. Thank you.

    This is/was a very cool truck. I’ve always dreamed of a manual version that wasn’t the diesel. Supposedly a tiny number came from the factory this way and this looks like one.

      There is actually a fault occurring in the video which I have since fixed. During restoration the car had the original clutch plate remanufactured (because original X300 clutch kits are NLA). You can notice the clutch slipping slightly under wide open throttle in the footage. Turns out there was something wrong with the remanufactured clutch. Fortunately I had a spare, which has now been fitted so the car is much better again!

    Thank you very much, good and clear video! Do you advise it for new drivers a little far from the city's center (30 km from big cities) ?

    • @Biggles
      @Biggles 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the kind words. These cars are at their best in the city. Although you can drive them on highways, you have to keep in mind that they are quite light and the engine is not so powerful. This means in strong winds you feel the car being blown around somewhat and passing cars at speed is difficult. I hope this advice helps.

    Mental. Absolutely mental the lengths you have to go through just because of a small rubber ring. I think I’d sooner just top it up with oil than to have to jump through all these hoops 😂 I’ll have to check my car now just to see if it has a leak in the same spot just out of curiosity. Amazing work though, seriously!

      Your assessment of my state of mind taking this work on is accurate I’m afraid! Thanks for the comment. This is my “special” car, a mechanically restored and resprayed XJR6 factory manual. The car is so nice that the oil leak was somewhat letting the side down, so I always knew I would fix it. Very pleased with the results and while I was in there I managed to make the car run better by curing a tiny, but annoying, air leak. Christmas well spent!! Don’t forget I changed the clutch at the same time to rectify a faulty clutch plate, so there was so much more work on top of this.

      @@Biggles to be honest, if there ever was an example to go through all this effort for, it would be for a factory manual car like you have here. I suppose in the pursuit of perfection, you have to pay close attention to even the smaller details like this. Honestly does look like a fantastic example and it makes me happy to see such caring owners of these cars like yourself. I have an XJR but it’s my daily driver and I have no place to really work on it but the street so I haven’t really had the opportunity to get really stuck into in-depth work like this. In no way do I feel skilled or confident enough to do so though but it would be nice to just give it a bash one day. I have a similar air leak issue on my car which whilst this doesn’t have too much effect on the running of the car, is definitely present and annoying. Maybe one day I’ll have the time to take it apart and investigate it properly, especially now that you’ve put this guide on here! Thank you for documenting this!
